The levels themselves are varied in both their visuals and the gameplay that takes place in the, with each level introducing new mechanics and weapons to play with, seamlessly tying together the flow of mechanics with the level design. I think some of the loading is masked by transitional cutscenes between planets, but even so, it's remarkable that levels of this scale and level of detail are loading seamlessly and is another feature that excites me about future titles because, over time, more impressive games tend come out as developers get used to the new systems. Powered by the PS5's custom SSD, Rift Apart leverages its speed to the fullest, having you shift between levels and dimensions almost instantly. It sets the console apart and is one of the things that make it feel like a leap forward this generation.Īnother feature that blew me away was the game's loading times. Whenever Sony talked about the adaptive triggers or the haptic feedback of the controller, I was worried it'd be more of a gimmick that wasn't very impressive but now that I've tried it, I think it's fantastic, and I'm excited to see how it'll be used in other PS5 titles. The trigger will also vibrate when firing certain weapons with faster fire rates, and it adds a level of immersion that I didn't realise I wanted. For example, pulling R2 halfway with the shotgun equipped fires one barrel and gives some resistance, but forcing the trigger down fully unleashes both barrels.

What's also great is how the Dualsense's adaptive triggers respond to each of the game's weapons. I will say that they are all a lot of fun to use, and they can all be upgraded and levelled up which not only gives damage increases but alters the weapons in functional ways at level 5, like the shotgun weapon getting an extra 2 barrels or your pistol shooting in a 3 shot spread. They're neat because of what they do, but I didn't think they were that useful, only ever using them to either get weapon-based trophies for the Platinum (which I got in just over 13 hours according to the PS5s playtime counter) or when I was low on other ammo. I will say that I found some of them to be more "fun over function", like the Topiary Sprinkler, a gun that lets you toss out sprinklers that stun enemies for a while by turning them into bushes or the Ricochet, which shoots a ball at an enemy and then lets you repeatedly tap R2 to let it hit multiple times. It's an action/adventure third-person shooter/platformer with a big focus on the guns, and the weapons here are both varied and fun to use.
Ratchet and clank release date Ps4#
I’ll fire up the game as soon as it goes live tonight and report back with my impressions soon.I can't say I'm a long-time player of the Ratchet and Clank franchise: I'd only played the 2016 PS4 release before this one, but I knew enough about it going in that I knew what to expect from the moment to moment gameplay.

Nonetheless, I still love and enjoy many PlayStation exclusives and I’ve pre-ordered this one so I can play and review it as well, review code or no. We, of course, did not receive a review copy because Sony has inexplicably blacklisted us and refuses to tell us why or communicate with us at all, which I find both rude and super unhelpful. The WaPo’s Gene Park says it’s the best Sony exclusive since Bloodborne which is high praise indeed. It looks like a few sites are giving the game an “average” score of 7/10 which is a bit worrisome, but over 100 critics have reviews penned for the game already.

Who isn’t recommending it I wonder? Even the lower-scored reviews I’ve seen recommend the game. On OpenCritic it’s getting an 88/100 with 97% of critics recommending the game. Right now, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is holding down a perfectly respectable 89/100 on Metacritic.
